My journey began in Chengdu, in Southwest China, where I was born and raised. Shaped by its distinctive geography and layered history, Chengdu has long been a meeting place of cultures, traditions, folk customs, and different ways of thinking and believing. Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, alongside local traditions and everyday life, have all contributed to the cultural landscape I grew up within.
These experiences continue to live quietly in my music. Rather than presenting cultural identity as something fixed or explicit, I am interested in how it can emerge through sound — through texture, timbre, resonance, and the subtle relationships between musical materials. My cultural roots often reveal themselves not through quotation, but through the way I listen and the way I shape sound.
Travel has also become an important part of my creative journey. Moving between places and encountering people from different cultural backgrounds has opened up new ways of listening, thinking, and understanding. It has allowed me to experience different lifestyles and perspectives, while continually questioning and expanding my own.
Driven by my curiosity about contemporary music and cross-cultural dialogue, I eventually travelled abroad to continue my studies and develop my artistic practice. Living and working across different cultural contexts has encouraged me to experiment, take risks, and explore new possibilities for musical expression.
Throughout this journey, I have found inspiration in landscapes, people, memories, traditions, and the spaces between cultures. Music has become my way of documenting these encounters — of listening, remembering, transforming, and sharing. This website is a space where I bring some of these journeys together: the music I create, the collaborations I cherish, the ideas I explore, and the experiences that continue to shape who I am as an artist.

About Me
As a composer, pianist and project coordinator, Huan works across China and the UK, developing new music through collaborations with performers, artists and cultural organisations. Her artistic practice focuses on contemporary composition, with particular interests in timbre, cultural memory, intercultural dialogue, and how musical ideas evolve across geographical and cultural contexts.
Huan’s work is rooted in her experience of growing up in Southwest China and subsequently studying and working internationally. Rather than treating cultural identity as a fixed musical language, she explores how different traditions, environments and artistic experiences can coexist, interact and transform one another within contemporary composition.
Alongside composition, Huan works as a curator and facilitator of international musical exchange. Her recent activities include developing cultural exchange programmes for the UK Chinese Music Ensemble, presenting at the Vienna Contemporary Composer Forum, and coordinating the China Contemporary Music Composition Symposium in Chengdu, facilitating communication with composers and speakers from Australia, the USA and Brazil.
